New Knowledge | Participatory Community Development

Greater Whitsunday Communities hosted an introductory workshop to Participatory Community Development with guest speaker Dr Peter Westoby on the 29th of May 2023. Peter has practiced community developmental work for over 30 years and is a well published author documenting his experience and practice methodology. Throughout the workshop, Peter Westoby, shared his expertise, passion, and insights into the world of community development.

The workshop was an enriching experience, where participants had the opportunity to unpack the  Methodological Map which explores the various methods of community development processes.  Peter focussed on exploring the three principles of the Micro method; “See what they see”, Buber’s movements, and Friere’s heurism. These three key principles teach us the importance of building meaningful relationships and effective dialogue in the community development process and how this can move a private concern of individuals into public action that is driven by the individuals themselves.

Attendees were captivated by his knowledge and practical strategies for creating thriving and inclusive, communities. It was a great opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who share a passion for community development, expand and refresh our knowledge and skills to make a positive impact in our communities.

We thank Peter Westoby for sharing his invaluable expertise and inspiring us all with his passion for community development. A special shoutout goes to all the participants who contributed their time, energy, and ideas to the workshop.

Stay connected with us as we continue to build upon the knowledge and inspiration gained from this workshop. Let's apply what we have learned, collaborate, and create a brighter future for our communities!
